The Last Assignment - Five Senses Friday

Last night I completed the 4 week Writing Class and during these 4 weeks we focused on the 5 senses, writing various descriptions and exercises all relating to sights, sounds, tastes, touch, and smells.  It was great fun.  I was encouraged,  learning from my peers, enjoying the assignments and then it was over.   I have included my last assignment, "write a short story encompassing the 5 senses."  And since today is Five Senses Friday, I thought it would be fun to share my venture into writing with you.

Deep in sleep after another restless night, I hear something buzzing.  It is an unpleasant sound with it’s constant noise.  The alarm clock did it’s job, it woke me out of my deep and dream-filled sleep.  I lay in bed momentarily so snug underneath the many layers of blankets thinking of the day ahead, and already planning an afternoon nap due to the lack of sleep.  I can hear the soft hum of the furnace as it converts the night-time chill into daytime comfort. “Time to get up”, I say to Toby as he remains stretched out in complete comfort at the foot of the bed.  I grab the bathrobe from the back of the door, snuggling my feet into my pink slippers that sit bedside, feeling their softness as they envelop my feet with their warmth  I hear a soft thud as Toby jumps from his spot on the bed on to the carpet. Running quickly down the stairs he waits patiently for me to open the front door to let him out for his morning inspection of the yard.  He can’t miss his morning inspection, verifying that nothing has wandered into his kingdom that would need immediate removal by chasing.

Opening the front door I feel a cold blast of air and spot tiny flakes of snow beginning to accumulate on the walkway.   Kingdom inspection takes some time so I begin the everyday ritual of preparing my morning coffee, filling the carafe with the exact amount of water and 4 scoops of freshly ground beans.   Almost immediately I hear it’s dripping sound delivering with it a waft of the familiar smell of fresh made java.

Returning upstairs to dress, I reach for the shower faucet, adjusting the knobs so the hot water will begin flowing shortly.  A warm shower early in the morning cleanses both my body and my mind.   After dressing I return to the kitchen, ready for that first comforting cup, my taste buds ready to enjoy the warm, brown liquid.  Toby is sitting at the backporch door, barking, reminding me that the kingdom is safe, inspection is complete and he is ready to return inside to a warmer spot.
Switching on the TV hoping to catch a weather report, I hear the newscaster,

“It looks like it’s going to be a bad day for traveling folks.  The roads will become slick and hazardous as the snow continues to accumulate.  Be careful if you must drive, stay home if you can.”

It is days like these that staying off the roads is an easy decision.   I can remain in my warm & cozy home because after years of driving on those hazardous roads I am now retired.   Retirement brings with it a chance to enjoy that 2nd cup of coffee, stay home when the weather becomes perilous, and delight in a well-deserved afternoon nap.

Still enjoying Trader Joe's flowers.....

I usually always have pics of Toby, but this very independent fat cat is my daughter's cat, Sunny.  After seeing my sweetie yesterday, I stopped at my daughter's and Sunny was begging to have his portrait taken.  See how well he dressed for his session?

"Remember that feeling as a child when you woke up and the morning smiled?  It's time you felt like that again."  ~  Taj Mahal

Until next time.......

  2. My five senses were very engaged as I read your short story! Evidently your artistic talent is not confined to your photography!

The best thing about retirement is not having to go out in the elements (except to pick up granddarlings from school!) By 3:00 p.m., the weather is usually tolerable!
