Reading Anything?

Are you reading anything at the moment, anything you would recommend to us who love a good book?

This past month I read two books, "The Kitchen House".  Another of the many, many stories of the lives of American slaves.  This ofcourse, takes place in the South, on a big plantation with many slaves, mostly well treated.  Along comes an orphaned white child and because there is nothing else to do with her, she ends up living among the slaves and considers them her family.  It is her story, living among both families white & black as she becomes a woman struggling with the treatment of the blacks in the deep south.  Many characters in this book, took me awhile to get everyone straight, who belonged to who...almost needed a little cheat sheet.  This was the book chosen for our February Book Club, and unfortunately I missed it.  I think if I would have attended the discussion I may have found more of an appreciation for this book, sometimes discussions do that.  But it did not compare to my favorite book of the South, "The Help" altho a completely different era, sometimes the treatments were the same.

The second book I completed recently was "The Lost Wife".  Again a story of history, taking place during the rise of Hitler and the devastation he wrought among the Jews.  Slavery in a different form.  Two people, Josef a young Gentile man living in Poland and Lenka a young Jewish woman also living in the same city.  They meet and fall in love but are torn apart by the ravages of war, Josef to the US and Lenka to the Jewish workcamps never reuniting until many, many years later.  It is both of their stories, beautifully written with phrases that will no doubt bring tears to your eyes before you close the pages of this book.

My sister-in-law recently sent me a delightful book which I am reading in between....The title, "Eight Girls Taking Pictures".  Individual chapters on early women photographers, their histories, their journeys in becoming photographers.  Such a insightful read.

And now am starting "The Secret Scripture" by Sebastian Barry....a book group favorite.  Just barely started, will give you a review later.

And must begin our Book Club choice for this month, "Don't Let Me Go" by Catherine Ryan Hyde.

I am hoping all this shows up....I was doing a copy paste and I am not sure blogger likes that.  And I don't know what the heck all that space is on top, I can't get rid of it.  Spacey....like me!  aha, went back in and was able to remove all those spaces.  Blogger, definitely a mind of HIS own.

Until next time....

  2. They all look good. I'm reading -- at least trying to read "Canada" by Richard Ford. "The Kitchen House" is high on my list to read. Maybe for a future book club. Thanks for the suggestions.

  3. The Aviators Wife is marvelous, and also, if you have not read it before.... Dan Browns ILLUSTRATED ANGELS AND DEMONS. Tells so much about Rome in a very exciting book. There is a tour in Rome that is called Angels and Demons and is fantabulous... you see the city with amazed eyes, and the book has it all in it. Be sure to see the illustrated version....

  5. Good heavens - you're a big reader - I feel ashamed - I need to read more!! :) I have to laugh at your comment about Blogger being spacey - WordPress strips spaces - sometimes I can't get a space between a photo and text for the life of me - argghhh!

  6. Okay - over vacation I read "Defending Jacob", "Men and Dogs" and "Tell Me Lies". Loved Defending Jacob, but wished for at least two more chapters to end it. Men & Dogs - a little strange, but a quick read. Tell Me Lies - picked up on the clearance rack at B&N, where I pick up most of my books.
Currently just started reading The Castaways by Elin Hilderbrand.

  9. I've just finished reading The Girl you Left Behind by Jojo Moyes. The story is based on a portrait, split into two parts. One based in 1919 in a small French town as German occupied France the next part is 90 years later based in London. Fascinating story line and the type of book you just cant put down.

Love your tulips. Its spring flowers are something I really miss here in India.

  10. Books I've read recently... The Paris Wife - about the early years of Ernest Hemmingway - funny story, I recently found out that the best friend of my bro-in-law is Hemmingway's grandson, his dad was given up for adoption by one of the many women Hemmingway charmed. I've read The 19th Wife, State of Wonder and am currently reading The Language of Flowers. I would recommend all! xo, Becky

  11. First of all...LOVE LOVE your new blog header!! Cherry red does a girl good♥ Second, always a delight when you recommend books to us addicts! My recommendation for you this month is..."Alligator Lake" by Lynne Bryant. One of the reviews says, "A lyrical, gorgeous novel about fractured family, racial tensions, and the way the past flows right up through the present. Bryant's eloquent tale may be Southern at heart, but it's universal in its powerful message."

  12. Ewwwww....I feel like I hit the jackpot with this post. I love historical and realistic fiction so I copied down all the titles! Thanks for the suggestions. I loved On the Corner of Bitter and Sweet and now I am reading The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Society. LOVE it so far. It is written totally in letters back and forth between people. Brilliant.

  13. I used to read ALL the time.
Now, I spend so much time reading lovely blogs, like yours, I barely have time for anything else.
I'm missing out on a lot of good books, though. Maybe I should budget my time more wisely, and read some of those interesting sounding books.

Blogger does have a mind of HIS own, sometimes...lol

  14. Gosh, I used to love to read. I cannot seem to sit still long enough these days. The last really good books I read were old classics: East of Eden and Grapes of Wrath. I'd read them again if I could only concentrate!

  15. I just finished reading the Guernsey Literary & Potato Peel Pie Society which is a favorite of mine. I didn't like The Kitchen House. Well, the first half was fine, but the second half just made me angry. Nothing compares to The Help, does it?! The Thirteenth Tale was good.
