Yesterday we had spring here in Chicagoland. The sun was shining, the birds chirped, the temps almost reached 70 degrees. It was glorious. I grabbed my camera just to see if I could capture little signs that once again Spring has returned, but as you can see, it is slow, really really slow in arriving.
And with Spring the critters arrive....well, not really this particular bunny (took this in Arizona) but definitely cousins of his. Love this one's big ears and the chunk missing on the right ear.
Since my lovely vacation to Arizona I have been neglect in educating us with our "words to sound smart"....I have chosen the word diaspora as this week's word. It originally was used to described Jews living outside Israel and later expanded its meaning to describe any body of people scattered outside of their homeland. I do believe that all the residents that live in the Sun Lakes, AZ community are definitely diaspora....not a single one is a native of Arizona....they all came from different places, usually from colder climates searching for the warmth of the sun. How about you, are you a diaspora? living outside or beyond your original home? I guess I could classify myself as such since my roots are in Texas but now I have lived so long in the Midwest (30+ years) that if I moved from here I would be another diaspora.

Many in CO are diaspora but after 20 years I consider myself native. Glad your buds are ready to burst. Last week's cold and snow stunted many blooms in Denver. Today - more rain and snow. I think I'll read.
ReplyDeleteMy husband is "diaspora" from GA. He would like to go native and make me diaspora one of these days. Looks like there is hope of spring for you--when you can see pink in the buds, its a good sign! I should probably go buy some pansies too. Thanks for saying so!

you have taught me a lesson about the word "diaspora" - i am a Virginian through & through. maybe one day i will live some where else. GOD only knows that. but for now i will be a "Thoroughbred" of her lands. ha. ha!! when i leave the area, she calls me home. & i come running. she is my "mother lands". & i am truly thankful & honored to be allowed to live here. ( :

ReplyDeleteI especially love your first image Deanna, and all the pinks happening is very pretty on the page. I bought two punnets of violas about a month ago but the poor seedlings got burnt from too much sunshine and petered out; too keen, too early and I obviously missed a beat with keeping the water to them at a crucial moment. Will try again in another month. They are beautiful to see en masse, but then most flowers are.

Really enjoying the new header and those ears are something to be proud of (the bunny's, not yours - not that they aren't something to be proud of....but...). I am glad you got a glimpse of Spring. I fear that we are in the same boat - little or no Spring and immediately and imposing Summer heat. We were 80 plus degrees last week and finally (Spring like) cooler over the weekend and today (yippee!)

ReplyDeleteI'm only 100 miles from where I was born, so I'm not sure that it counts as Diaspora. Interesting thought and my family still in New England still asks me when I am coming home.
