Oh For Cryin' Out Loud.....

Oh for cryin' out loud!!  As I sat and read the newspaper and drank my coffee this morning there were 2 articles in the morning newspaper, one from a regular columnist and one on the editorial page discussing a new series coming to TV on the OXYGEN cable network entitled "All My Babies' Mamas."  A reality TV series based on an Atlanta, GA rapper, Shawty Lo (where do they come up with these names??) his 10 former girlfriends and their 11 children.  They live together in a fancy mansion in the Atlanta suburbs along with his skinny new girlfriend that is as old as his eldest child.  How would you like to be their neighbors??  Not only does this reality show de-mean all women, but it truly is a slap in the face to black women everywhere.  And we the American public TV watcher are asked to laugh at this situation.  Along with this disgusting new show we also have the chunky blond girl called Honey Boo Boo who is being sold these days as some kind of new Shirley Temple (they're kidding right??).  Quoting from the Chicago Tribune...."To get her energy level up, the 6-year-old Boo Boo's parents give her a combination of Mountain Dew and Red Bull.  They call it "go-go juice." That's not the Good Ship Lollipop.  That's child abuse."  I refuse to watch either one of these TV shows and I encourage you to do the same....maybe with no viewers the producers of such trash TV will be out of a job.

There are plenty of good shows on TV that are definitely worth watching (The Good Wife, Parenthood, Nashville, Scandal, and Showtime's Homeland are a few of my favorites) all with strong women.  Not always the picture perfect woman, but definitely honest portrayals of today's woman and would never depict the role of a woman like those in "All My Babies' Mamas."

I think I have ranted enough....but issues like this really try my soul.

Wednesday Ramblings

It's cold with still no snow....grrrr and really none predicted for the near future.  I think Dallas, TX has received more than we have...Dallas??? when I lived there as a kid if it snowed the whole city shut down eventho whatever snow fell was usually gone by the afternoon.  Schools would shut down, city buses didn't run, many businesses would close if there was 2 inches of snow (we never ever received more than 2 inches).  I remember the first time after moving away from Texas driving in the snow....scared shitless, sorry for the off-color, but I wanted you to get the true feeling and scary wasn't strong enough to describe the event.  But I lived through it, no dents on the car and I emerged a little more confident in my driving abilities.

Snow I can handle, ice no way.  Ice definitely keeps me out of the car and any urges I may have to shop, go to the grocery store, meet girlfriends, go to a movie, visit my sweetie....anything.  But since there is no snow and no ice, I continue to shop, meet my girlfriends for coffee and am planning to see a movie on Friday.  Has anybody seen Life Of Pi?  That is the pick.  It is already at the "cheap seats" theater and I don't want to miss it before it leaves the big screen.  Something about shrinking that Tiger down to TV size gives me incentive enough to get to the theater.

I am little sad....I just read on the internet that Patti Page, the Singing Rage, one of the best known female artists in traditional pop music has died at 85.  She was so popular when I was in school.  One of her big hits then was "How Much Is That Doggie In The Window".  Our music was a little different than what the highschoolers are listening to today.  No "do whops" can be heard anywhere.

And one final thought....I am so happy that the Fiscal Cliff (a way over-used word, that I do believe has been banned from the English dictionary) has been averted to a later date.  Maybe by then a new phrase will rise to describe the next financial hurtle, fiscal cliff was over-used and over-rated.  Did you really not think there would be a save at the last minute....!!

I hope you enjoyed the roses....I blame them on a trip to Trader Joe's.

Saying Yes

2012 has now come to a close and 2013 is open to new adventures, I am going to learn to say Yes more often. This is my word for 2013.  Saying no places a roadblock to growth, saying yes is an invitation to at least try.

  • Yes!  for eating healthier and staying away from sweets (well not all sweets, but less)
  • Yes!  to education, either on-line or a physical campus
  • Yes!  to contacting old friends that I haven't seen in awhile
  • Yes!  to exercising (oh good Lord, I have to, even taking a walk is better than nothing)
  • Yes!  to continuing my photography growth
  • Yes!  to a 365
  • Yes!  to a trip abroad (I am bound and determined to get across that big pond and visit a foreign country)
  • Yes!  to organization (No details here, the list is far too long)
  • Yes!  to walking in the Alzheimer's Walk and raising as much money as I can for continued research to conquer this horrible disease.
  • Yes!   to saying yes to opportunities that may come my way.
  • Yes!  to volunteering, it does wonders for my heart & soul.
  • Yes!  to praying more and worrying less.

I did take a walk (one of the "yes's" on my list) this afternoon with Toby by my side and camera in hand. The sun was shining and very little wind but the temps were cold and still no snow (drats!).   After the two of us wandered for awhile, me taking pictures and Toby exploring I looked at Toby and realized he had picked up a burr on his little face and had tangled itself so tight that it had totally covered his eye.  With that, we came home to remove the nasty burr.  No pulling would loosen it, so I had to retrieve the scissors and cut. Thank goodness, Toby is a good & patient dog.  After several snips, the burr was finally gone, albeit a lot less facial hair fur on Toby's head, but thank God no damage to the eye.

Day #1 of my 365....

Enjoying the walk before the burr....

And last, thank you, thank you, thank you....for being a part of my little piece of blog land.  I so appreciate your visits, your comments....you keep me going and inspired.  Thank you for a wonderful 2012 and I so look forward to a brilliant 2013.
