My Loss of the Written Word

Today over at Focusing on Life, Kelly writes about the "written word" how powerful it is and the necessity of hand writing.  I agree 100% however as the aging process takes over my body it has affected my ability to hand write.  Arthritis has settled in a few of my fingers resulting in writing becoming a painful process, not to mention the "hen scratching" that appears.  Even last evening as I was writing a little note inside a birthday card to a friend I realized my nice handwriting has bit the proverbial dust.  But that is not stopping me from putting words to a page, thank goodness for computers, they are now my hand-writing tool.  Somehow (thank God) typing on a computer does not bother my fingers, perhaps because I am not griping an instrument.  So my words will continue to flow, just not with pen in hand.

And by the way, welcome to Fall, when the leaves begin to turn their glorious colors of golds, oranges and reds, when we put away the flip flops and bring out the sweaters, when we shift from iced tea to hot tea or cocoa, when we taste savory soups & stews instead of watermelons & ice cream (altho I continue to eat ice cream year round, vanilla ice cream with hot chocolate is a food group in my diet).

And speaking of Fall are you as excited as I am that the new Fall season of TV has begun?  Summer always leaves me wanting...altho I did watch a few good series this past summer.  I have watched 2 new shows already, "The Red Band Society" about a group of rather seriously ill kids that "live" in a hospital...their triumphs and struggles, well written and the kids are all appealing.  Octavia Spencer plays the "stern" nurse that keeps the kids in tow but it becomes obvious that she has a heart of gold. And "Madame Secretary", a tough, smart, quick thinking woman with no hidden agenda that steps into the role of Secretary of State with no political background.  I vote that we replace all of our politicians in office today with that kind of person.  Many new shows to watch, so little time.

And PS on one of our shopping trips with my sis-in-law I picked up some new mugs and cups at Marshalls, how could I resist the one above!!??  I know I am helpless.

  3. Your textured image is perfect for fall, the mug perfect for hot tea. I am always sad when the flip flops get put away for the winter, but it is nice to put on sweaters and jeans for a change. And yes... ice cream should be a year round treat. :)

    Simply perfect.
I wanted to watch Red Band society, but missed it.

  6. I think I will be very sad when the day comes that I can't hand write in my journal anymore. One of my favorite shows started last night, The Voice. I am also giving Blacklist a go, if I can stay up until 11 p.m. every Monday night. The Red Band Society looked really good. We are not big t.v. watchers so that is the sum of our show watching.

  7. I love the quote find, Deanna!

J's G'ma has shaky hands and can hardly write anymore. She will sign her name in cards, but has family help her with bills, ect. Yea for keyboards.

The leaves are turning on the prairie and are beautiful. I need to get out and snap up some of the beauty.

    1. Sorry to read about the trouble you're having with your hands. Perhaps you want to look into speech recognition software. With that you can talk to your computer and it writes the words for you. I know someone who used it all the time and it worked very well.

  11. Why, Deanna! I'm shocked ... shocked, I say ... that you bought a new mug! Deanna and mugs? Yes, hopeless indeed. And lucky for us ... this one is a beauty. You do have a knack for finding them. My handwriting has gone to you-know-where in a handbasket and I can't even blame arthritis. But I do blame the keyboard, I've become so reliant on it. ... sigh ...

  13. I have days when I have to do a double take on my handwriting to make sure it is, indeed, mine. As for vanilla ice cream and hot chocolate sauce - I'm pretty sure it is right there on the food pyramid. (do people even pay attention to the food pyramid anymore?). Love your edit on this shot - and I always enjoy your mug shots (you must have one heck of a collection).

  15. Vanilla ice-cream with hot chocolate sauce sounds like a lovely food group to have!! I love your mug which speaks to us of the pleasures of autumn, my favourite season with spring! Over here the newest "Downton Abbey" series has started with enough drama to want us to watch it the following week! Clever! "Strictly Come Dancing" is also about to start up!
Yes, computers are marvellous inventions when fingers start to become stiff and I just love all the e-friends I have made since I've had my blog!
    Have a happy day!

  24. Love your new mug, Deanna! Perfect for Fall.
I've been trying to relearn to write! Using computers has left me with ghastly handwriting and I'd like to improve it. Arthritis robbed my Mom of her beautiful handwriting too.
    Happy Autumn to you! xo
