My Random Five On Friday...Friday the 13th Edition

It's been a long time since joining Nancy for her Random 5 on Friday.  Nancy took a break from blogging, which happens to most of us now and again, but we in the blogging world are happy to have her back.

1. This week I was still riding high from my trip to Arizona....culling thru the gazillion or so images that I took while there.  In my post on what I did while there, I forgot to mention that we went to a Dog Show.  Well, what fun that was.  As a dog lover, it was a delight to walk around watching the dogs being groomed and I mean groomed to the max.  All of the owners were generous in letting me gawk and take tons of pictures.  Let me share just a couple......or more.

Sweet, sweet face

Suppose he is imitating David Bowie??

This one looks ready for a little mischief...

She looks so dreamy but then I stop and think about the mud in my front yard and that stops me dead in my tracks for even thinking about a white dog...!!

2. And speaking of mud, the sun is shining, the temps are moderate so I grabbed my camera hoping to find some semblance of Spring.  I did see a couple of shoots of green and a teeny tiny bud on my quince bush, but for the most part it looks pretty much like winter around here.  There are still piles of dirty, ugly snow especially in parking lots, and with each melting layer I find old newspapers that were buried along with piles of ya know, piles.

So instead of bits of Spring I took pictures of the survivors of our (once again) bad winter.  It's hard to believe that there are still remnants of hydrangea petals and the sedum is still standing tall. Amazing, but a few of the bushes aren't looking too perky and an evergreen right by the front door has a lot of dead pine needles.  Spring has sprung in many places but I have lived here long enough to know that Spring is a fickle season around here.  One day we can experience 70 degrees (like the weatherman is predicting for next week), and the next day a freeze.  But I do know that it's on its way, and that's good enough for me.

3. I started reading Kristen Hannah's book "The Nightingale" which is on the bestseller list and she apparently is a very popular writer, but....after reading almost 1/2 of it's 400 + pages I put it down. Sorry, just didn't like her writing style.  And didn't I tell you that "The Girl On the Train" was a real page turner??...it's been Number 1 on the best-seller list for about 3 weeks in a row.

4. My birthday was Tuesday, no big celebration, just a quiet day at home.

5. So many of the shows that I regularly watch on TV have already had their season finales, so early, but now we have new shows joining the foray.  I have always enjoyed a good mystery so I am liking "Secrets and Lies".  Good cast and a who-dun-it.  It is a "limited run" which means it has a beginning and an end and doesn't drag on from one season to the next.

Until next time.....

  3. What fabulous shots of the dogs. I know an all white dog & dirt just don't mix. Come to think of it all white anything and dirt just don't mix.
Glad you had a nice (albeit) quiet birthday. - I'm gearing up for mine next week. I turn 59 - One more year and it's the big 60!
I need to find another good book to read.
Sorry your spring is so slow but you know it will arrive. You got some love photos of flowers past their prime.
We tape a lot of our shows so when the season is over and there isn't much on television we watch the shows we've taped.

  4. Those dog pics are fabulous...as are the spring photos. I'm reading "Girl on the Train" too and enjoying it. AND watching "Secrets and Lies." I'm kind of annoyed at the guy though. Seems like he's a little bit stupid. But I'm enjoying it nonetheless.

  7. Hi Deanna, I love your poochie photos! I have always wanted to go to a dog show - I watch the big one every Thanksgiving. I have a white dog and surprisingly, they stay fairly clean! Maybe it is because mine is just plain lazy....So glad that spring is on the way for you there - Happy belated Birthday to you! I almost bought 'Girl on a Train' last week but was wonderfing if it was worth it. I will bring it home now! xo Karen

  9. Who can resist those sweet diggity dogs? The photo of the hydrangea petals is awesome. I like them dried almost as much as when they're in full-bloom. But - any blooms would be welcome right now! Enjoy your false spring, Deanna.

  11. Love the doggie photos . . .
White one was charming but the MUD would keep me away too . . . I liked the little Yorkie like look. He/she/it looks like fun.
It was such a treat to see Nancy has returned. I need to catch up with her now that I back home.
I read three books while away and believe me, they "saved the day" and kept me sane!
    Happy seventy degrees next week!

  12. I can only imagine that if I went to a dog show I would spend a good portion of it trying to figure out how to sneak one or two (or 5) out in my purse. Adorable little ones. My daughter texted me this week with an "OMG, there is grass! What's more, blue skies." I told her I was not surprised as I have yet to see a year go by that didn't have a summer. But I can appreciate her (and Tamar's and a ton of other Bostonians) 'so over it' when it comes to winter. We didn't get hit with it until mid-January, but boy oh boy, when it came it came with a vengeance.

So glad you have an enjoyable birthday. Have a wonderful weekend Deanna.

  14. Deanna,
I have been to a lot of livestock shows, but never a dog show. I love watching Westminster on tv. I think it would be very fun to take candid pictures at a dog show.

We are enjoying the mild temperatures too, but I have lived in South Dakota long enough to know there is a spring blizzard or winter storm lingering. It's the pits that they have to hit us during calving season.

    Have a fantastic weekend!

  17. A very happy Belated Birthday to you!! Your furry baby shots are just so adorable and I totally agree with you regarding the white dog... luckily mine is black so the mud is hidden unless she steps on the cream carpet!! I do hope the hints of spring are with you very soon. xx

  20. What cute pups! I kept expecting to see Toby and Cinder pop up as well. Spring is definitely fickle! Sunny and 70 here on Monday; snow showers next weekend. Sheesh!

  21. Your pup pictures are beautiful. Dog shows are fun to attend if you aren't involved in the show. I have a friend who breeds Havanese and she asked me to help once at a show. It was quite stressful with all the grooming and making sure they were walking correctly. After that experience, I told her I would groom but she would have to walk the ring....It's amazing all the work that goes into dog shows..

  23. Precious pups. You must enjoy your vacations tremendously. I sure do enjoy seeing and hearing about them. I would love to see your beautiful barns at The Barn Collective. I guess I am not much of a promoter and I don't do enough soliciting for participants. My blogging has slacked off the last couple of months. Wondering if I need a break.

  25. Happy Birthday...a few days late. For years if I read more than a few pages on a book, I felt I had to finish it. NO MORE...in the past year I have put aside 3 or 4 books. There are too many good books to read to waste time reading one that isn't up to par.

  26. Happy belated birthday, Deanna! LOVE your dog photos. It's obvious that you are a fan of our canine friends. Yep, some books do not deserve to be finished. :)

  27. Happy Birthday to you! Your images are beautiful...the dogs made me smile. Our dirty snow is melting here too...no signs of spring...yet! But the air is filled with birds!
