A Little Texture on a Tuesday....

I am participating in Kim Klassen's Beyond Layers class and have so enjoyed her posts, her tutorials, and her generosity (beyond compare).  This week it is all about b&w....I admire other's b&w work, but I tend to think in color when I take photos...so it is always a struggle for me to think in b&w and what will look good in b&w.  Tracey Clark is offering a b&w class over at Big Picture Classes that I am very tempted to take to get more comfortable with this medium.  Do you know how difficult it is for me to change a beautiful soft orange ranunculus into a b&w with no color....it is like rubbing chalk on a blackboard, but sometimes I am pleasantly surprised by the results.

I really did (promise I did) like this when I converted this beauty into a b&w with soft brown tones.  I am thinking I might enlarge this and hang it in my husband's room.  Linking this to Kim's Texture Tuesday  Next week her challenge is b&w. so look's like I jumped the gun a wee bit this week, but then I always  was a little before my time kinda girl.

This I thought was kinda interesting because of the different textures....I took this in Arizona (ofcourse I took this in Arizona...see the cactus, you don't find containers full of cactus in Chicago)

And this one I took here the Saturday before I left on my trip to Arizona.  I love the light and the little circles of bokeh.  Between this and the pic above is about 1750 miles....the differences are amazing.

This I captured in my daughter's small garden.  Poor St. Francis, he is certainly showing his age.

So that's it....my little venture into b&w....more next week.

Until next time.....

  1. Haha...I kicked myself when I saw Kim's prompt for next week AFTER I posted my b/w for THIS week :). Oh well. I have the opposite inclination than you. I am waaaaay more comfortable in b/w and have been pushing myself into color more. I just love the attention to detail b/w gives you...it allows you to notice patterns, shapes, textures that you might not take note of when color is involved because attention usually goes to the color. I really like that photo of the cactus in b/w. I'm not sure you would truly appreciate the extent of the spikiness of the cactus if it had been in color.

  2. Deanna, These are lovely. The bokeh in the third one of the tree is wonderful. I like you see things in color. I have a son who is a great photographer and who is color blind. He does breathtaking black and white, so I explore it some.Great job!

  3. Love all of them! Beautiful processing and I especially love the flower. Is that one of Barbara's ranunculus? I have a shot of one that I love and now want to try it in black & white. I tend to want to keep the color but I love these so much that I want to give it a try. Makes me really look forward to Picture Black & White!

  4. I found your blog through Barbara in Tuscon and immediately was drawn to you by what you wrote about your husband. I too live in AZ only North of Phoenix and one of the reasons I liked Barbara's blog. Of course since my name is Barbara also may have been drawn also. :) Just wanted to say I love your photography, your life's message since I lost my husband I took up photography and have found a new friend my life. I am also in Kim's Beyond Layers although haven't done anything with it yet. I started with her about a year ago and learned so much from her. Funny how this internet works and we are all somehow together.
