Letters on Friday

Dear June 7th, today is the anniversary of my Dad's passing in 2001.  Dad was 85 and died due to complications after surgery.  His poor heart just couldn't rebound.  He had his first major heart attack back in the 50's when I was just a teenager, had several after that but still managed to live a full life until 85.  God bless you Dad,I pray that you and Mom are enjoying eternity together.

Dear Birds, I love watching you come to the bird feeder and then pop over to the bird bath to follow your meal with a good drink.  But man oh man you guys go through the feed, it's like it was free or something, oh wait, it is free.

And by the way, I peeked at the cardinal nest yesterday...there is only one little one that seems to be hatched, still more eggs but Mama nearly has a coronary every time I go near, so no photos yet.

Dear Roses, you are absolutely spectacular this year....probably because of all the rain we have had.  And how fortunate that everything seems to be so lush right now as I am going on a Garden Walk tomorrow.  I can imagine the beauty that awaits.  FYI...just read where this has been the "all-time wettest" year in Chicago history....doesn't surprise me.

Dear "Great Gatsby", you were one treat for the eyes with your gorgeous costumes and settings, however I was a little disappointed on the whole.  There was no "depth" to the movie, I guess I wanted more meat, but I can't complain about the visuals.  Leo is a beauty with those blue eyes as well as Carey Mulligan as Daisy.

Dear Esther Williams, I read in the newspaper this morning that you passed away peacefully in your sleep yesterday at 91.  Most of you are too young to remember Esther Williams, she was a unique movie star in the 40's swimming her way to stardom.  Her movies may not have been great art, but they were certainly fun and there has been no one like her since  Thank you Ms. Williams for entertaining millions with your unique style and beauty.

Hope everyone has had a delightful week and that next week will be even better.  Happy Summertime.

  1. Gosh Esther Williams we just watched a movie of hers, she was quite popular in France. What a sweet shot of the Cardinal, I've never seen one in real, the macro of your rose is stunning.

  2. I sympathize with you on the loss of your father. Mine died when he was 72 and that has been a while ago. But I still miss him a lot. The cardinals have been busy around here, too.

  6. My sympathies to you on this anniversary. I lost my dad almost 16 years ago. He was 76. I still miss him.

    That cardinal is beautiful!

I was never a great fan of The Great Gatsby--the book or the movie with Robert Redford. So I don't think I'll watch the new one, at least not yet.

  7. The beautiful Cardinal reminds me of my grandmother - they were her favorite. Esther Williams was quite the beauty! Thanks for sharing and enjoy your weekend.

    Hugs to you!

  8. The shot of the roses hanging over the green grass is exquisite! I can relate about the bird food. Lawdy. Thank you for confirming my suspicions about The Great Gatsby. Although I love Leo, I couldn't handle seeing a beloved story turned into Moulin Rouge.

  10. Those roses have such depth and clarity, I feel as though I should get my clippers and cut a few for my table! Of course I remember Esther - though I WAS very young when she was acting.

  11. Such a beautiful post and the picture of the roses is spectacular! I am waiting for them to run a day of Esther Williams on TCM now. She was such a beauty and such an elegant swimmer. I love her too. I know her from watching way too much TCM lol.

I am so wanting to go and see the movie too! Now, I'm not so sure, but hope to see it anyway.

I lost my Dad in 2000 at the young age of 69. I miss him too.

I had to smile at your paragraph about the birds and it being free lol. I too feed my little piggies too and I love to watch them get in the birdbath and take their sweet little baths. I keep it clean for them everyday. I just don't provide their little towels.

    A wonderful post ♥

  18. Dear Deanna, your roses are beautiful, I guess all that rain wasn't for naught. I put up a bird feeder at away, but don't seem to get many birds - and my seed is free, too. I'm a little disappointed, but well see where that goes. I remember Esther Williams, but don't think I've seen many of her movies - that might make for a fun movie night. Happy Saturday - enjoy the garden walk!

  20. Oh my ---- I didn't know Esther was even still alive! I loved her movies.
I have a very similar bird bath which I must get out today - I haven't before now as I feared it would become an ice rink for the birds with some of the cold nights we've had as of late.
