Gratitude - November 3rd

We had frost last night which gave my dying flowers a sweet coating of white.  Mornings like this make me aware and grateful for the changing seasons.  You can say all you want about Florida or Arizona, but I think I need the 4 seasons each year to remind me of how beautiful each season is and the gifts that come with each.  I think that we who live in areas that have 4 distinct seasons appreciate each one for their own distinct artistry.

"Autumn begins with a subtle change in the light,
with skies a deeper blue, and nights that
become suddenly clear and chilled.
The season comes full with the first frost,
the disappearance of migrant birds,
and the harvesting of the seasons's last crops."
Glenn Wolff and Jerry Dennis
Until next time.....

  1. What lovely frozen beauty. I do live in an area with all 4 seasons. I'm just not to fond of one of them. Although I do see a certain beauty in it as long as it doesn't last too long!.

  2. what a lovely shot, we really don't have 4 distinct, distinct seasons here though they do mark their changes enough, though I do miss the winters that were really winters-

  3. What a lovely shot this is! This weekend, I bought something called a woods chandelier... hard to explain what it is, but it looks like a bunch of sticks tied together with tiny lights hanging down looking like a wonderful winter chandelier. Took me right in to the meditative feel of winter. Those cozy mornings when you can light your candle, read your morning meditation, and enjoy looking out on the cold landscape. Love your shot here of Jack Frost! So much we have to be grateful for! Hard to even know where to begin!

  7. Well I didn't think I would ever say this, but after living in Florida for 10 years...I am missing the seasons bad! Your image is beautiful.

  8. Isn't that frost just the perfect touch? I find myself thinking that mid to low 70s on a regular basis would be just my calling - but then I remember snow days, and sweater weather in the Autumn. I won't complain if the hot Hot HOT summer stretches were a little less - but having them makes me appreciate the cooler days all the more.

  9. Beautiful shot! I love how the frost makes the details of the flower pop.

I love having 4 seasons, too. It sets a certain rhythm to my life.

  10. A beautiful photo that captures the essence of the season, and I'm grateful that you've used my words to illustrate it. If it's not inappropriate, I'd like to mention that the quote you've displayed -- “Autumn begins with a subtle change in the light, with skies a deeper blue…” – is from my and Glenn Wolff's book, It’s Raining Frogs and Fishes: Four Seasons of Natural Phenomena and Oddities of the Sky, which, coincidentally, has just been released in a newly updated edition. Feel free to quote it at will, in all seasons. And check out Glenn's illustrations -- they're stunning. Thanks! Jerry Dennis, www.jerrydennis.net

  11. Artistry is what you have captured here, my friend! I think you are right about having four seasons and being able to appreciate the beauty of each. I was just saying to someone the other day that you can look out my living room window and not know whether it is summer or winter! It all looks the same. Thank you for sharing the beauty of your four seasons. I always love seeing them through your eyes.

  14. I will never be a Florida or Arizona person. I definitely need the four seasons and Lake Michigan doesn't hurt either.
