Five Senses Friday The 3rd Edition

I began a class last night at our local college entitled "Adding Spice to Your Writing".  It is part of the  "continuing education for adults program" which basically means no grades....yippee.  At my age, grades are not something I want or need to worry about.  One of my friends said, "why would you mind a grade good or bad?"  I guess it is just that niggly feeling deep inside, left over from the "school days" that makes it essential for me to strive for a good grade.  Not having grades is a bonus, takes the pressure off, having homework that is not going to be graded is homework that I want to do, not have to do for the "grade".  So, after the teacher announced no grades, no critiques, no pressures, my shoulders relaxed and we began. Our first exercise was for our instructor to stand in front of us for approximately 3 minutes.  During that 3 minute time period we should write everything we see about her.  After the 3 minutes we each read our descriptions aloud.  The differences were notable between the 6 of us, demonstrating that we all see differently, we all describe differently, and we all certainly write differently.  Our second exercise involved the 5 senses, taste, feel, hear, see, and smell which leads me directly into today's Five Senses Friday edition.  Class was most enjoyable and I look forward to next week's session.  I may post my homework here, just so you can "see" it and get a "taste" and "feel"  for the class.  Hopefully I won't "smell" up  the place or "hear" any negative criticism along the way.  But sometimes negative criticism helps us to improve.

Today since it has been so, so cold (last night it was 6 degrees prior to going to bed) and we had snow in the weather forecast, instead of a "fun foto friday" Catherine and I decided to go see a movie.  "The Descendants" has received such rave reviews and George Clooney won "Best Actor" at the Golden Globes last week this was the one to see. Before going to the movie I said to myself, "Deanna, you don't need any popcorn.."  So what did I do as I walked thru the door....smelled the fresh popcorn and immediately walked to the concession counter and purchased a "small" bag of popcorn.  I have absolutely no will power whatsoever.    I did enjoy the movie, George Clooney is not only one of the most drop dead gorgeous men on the planet, he is also a terrific actor, very deserving of the award and a definite "go see".  After the movie we drove right across the parking lot to the California Pizza Kitchen". The Sedona Tortilla Soup and the Barbecued  Chicken Chopped Salad, two of my all-time fav's, were my choices without hesitation, they never disappoint and today was no different.

Did I mention the snow....yes it was snowing when we walked out of the movie and continued snowing....HARD while we were eating.....and HARDER still as I drove home.  All I could think of while driving was....please, Dear God, don't let me get into another accident, even a small fender-bender would drive State Farm right over the edge to cancel me.  God answered my prayer and I arrived home safely, without a scratch.

As you can see it is snowing so hard you can barely see the trees on the other side of the retention area.  Tomorrow should be gorgeous.  But the Friday night traffic has to be horrendous!! I can hear the snow plows roaring and the scrape, scrape, scrape of shovels as the neighborhood tries to stay ahead of the snow.

I am feeling so much better after seeing my sweetheart yesterday.  He had a rough spell after Christmas, depressed, not eating, but he seems to be back on track, eating well again and not so down.  Seeing him happy, always makes me happy.  He is still a handsome, handsome man.

"You only lose energy when life becomes dull in your mind.  You don't have to be tired and bored.  Get interested in something.  Get absolutely enthralled in something.  Throw yourself into it with abandon."  ~  Norman Vincent Peale

Until next time......

  1. Funny Deanna, I just visited my mom yesterday and mentioned that perhaps she should look into a class at the local college now that my dad is no longer at home. And here you post about your class today. I'm going to show her this and hope it motivates her. BTW, I do like that sparkle in your honey's eyes...he's still got it :)

  2. I had to laugh at the part where you told yourself you didn't need any popcorn and then promptly went and bought some...I'm exactly the same way, telling myself the same thing many times a day, but then doing it anyway.

I would've been a nervous wreck driving in that snow. I'm so happy you made it home safe and sound. Glad to hear your sweetie is doing okay. Hope you have a good weekend :)

  5. I don't think I would be too thrill having to drive in all that snow. Lovely shot.

  6. I loved that quote. I need to use this to help both of my parents. My mother especially gets bored and doesn't know what to do with her time now that Dad has moved to memory care. She goes to bed when most people are eating dinner. I have tried to get her involved, but you can't make people do things. They have to take some initiative. Anyway, I enjoyed your post. Have a great weekend!

  10. Popcorn is a must at the theater...unless it's a time when I smuggle snacks in my oversized purse. Glad you made it home safely and your sweetie is doing better.
